It was around the changing of the political system in 1989 when the demand arose that, besides the adults' professional training institutes, there should be an institutes for the general training of adults. The reason being, that one does not only need knowledge of a prfession but also reference points that help one improve one's quality of life, and find one's way in different life situations and conditions. In order to pronote this, the Bishop of Szombathely, dr. István Konkoly founded the Catholic Institute of Higher Education on 11 November 1992. The founder changed the name of the institute to Martineum Academy for Adults' Training on 15 January 2001.
Since the beginnings, the motto of the Institute has been the words of the Pope John Paul II: "Training is not the privilege of the fewbut everyone's right and obligation."
In the past 10 years of its existence, the Academy has been going through a particular dvelopment process. In addition to the initial programmes of almost exclusively ecclesiastical nature, the Institute has become more and more open to the actual social issues. It offers, on the one hand, programmes aiding family life, on the other hand, programmes aiding one's finding one's way in the life of the society.
The Kolping Training Frm for Office Work subsidized by the Vas County Labour Centre was founded in 1994, upon the initiation of of Gerhard Funke of Kaufbeuren, the twin city of Szombathely. The Training Firm does not follow the traditional office work training model, the participants acquire the administrative skills by the simulation of corporate life.
